Public Health Brigades at IU
Public Health Brigades is a sector of the largest, student-run organization, Global Brigades, Inc. Global Brigade's mission is to empower students to provide communities in developing nations with sustainable solutions that improve quality of life while respecting local culture. Here at Indiana University, we want to give students the platform to become leaders who have the desire to make a difference.
What do we do?
Public Health Brigades (PHB) design and implement public health solutions in the developing world. In collaboration with Medical and Water Brigades, this program allows volunteers and professionals to build relationships with rural communities and to create projects that combat the threat of disease and the challenge of limited resources. Our holistic model focuses on education and infrastructural development to ensure sustainability. PHB empowers volunteers with the material, know-how, and support to deliver solutions that provide value while preserving local culture and conserving the environment.
In addition, Public Health Brigades are implemented to strengthen the health infrastructure in communities by working with community members to build eco-stoves, latrines and more sanitary water storage units in the homes. The program is complimented with a public health education piece on the medical brigade for an integrated and preventative health service model. |
